DONATE A TREE
Thank you for considering donating wood or a tree to the Woodturners of Olympia. We are a chapter of the American Association of Woodturners (AAW) and registered with the IRS as a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Our members proudly support sustainable creative practices by obtaining and sourcing wood from salvaged, locally-sourced trees that have been previously felled due to wind storms, disease, damage, or old age.
There are many variables that makes for recycling such trees into turned functional and artistic items. By agreeing to donate and completing the contact information, we can arrange to come an assess whether to proposed donation meets the criteria for re-use.
Our process typically involves some of our members arriving at the tree(s) location and cutting up the existing log in to smaller pieces. In most cases, the tree is already on the ground due to storms. It is important to note we do not fell trees. If you are using a commercial tree service to take down the tree, we would suggest letting the service take limbs and other smaller sections of the tree and do most of the clean up as we have no viable way to clean up everything. Please note that not all trees are appropriate for wood turning, When the initial assessment visit is made all of those variables can be discussed in depth. The club can then reach final agreement on how can best achieve the balance of the home owners wishes and what is in the bounds of what the club can do to meet the homeowner’s goals.
