Workshop Details
Participants will need to provide their own tools (gouges, scrapers, skew) and safety gear such
as a face shield. Everything else will be provided by the Woodturners of Olympia. A more
detailed list of required tools will be sent out to registrants at a later date.
Workshop 1 BASICS REVISITED Sunday July 26, 2015
Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate
This will be a day primarily of techniques, not product, although you will have nice turnings to
take home at the end of the day. You’ll start with a 5-minute project so that Richard can
determine your skill level. There will be spindle work, end-grain hollowing, face work, and
more. As you work through projects you’ll refine shapes and develop your voice (personal style)
as you gain insights into the finer points of using gouges, skew chisels, and scrapers. You will
learn about common mistakes and how to avoid them.
Workshop 2 BOWLS Monday July 27, 2015
Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate
A day of turning open and enclosed bowls with turned detail. You’ll use gouges and scrapers for
cutting and scraping techniques. Richard will meet you where your skill level is at and take you
to your next level helping you perfect your technique.
Workshop 3 BOXES Tuesday – Wednesday July 28 – 29, 2015
Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced
DAY 1 will focus on cross-grain boxes. Producing these will require a wide range of face work and chucking techniques while offering open opportunities to perfect your designs and style.
Topics include timber selection, design, form and function.
DAY 2 will concentrate on end-grain boxes with suction-fit lids. These unique and fun boxes can
be designed to fit your design styles while adding a terrific feature to the lid. This will provide
an additional element to your repertoire of design elements.
