February 25, 2010; Turn and Learn and pot luck
The monthly meeting of WoO will be this Thursday, February 25, starting at 5:30 p.m. (note this is earlier than the usual 6:30 starting time). This month will be the annual “turn and learn – hands on” program. This also includes a “finger food” potluck, so bring something to eat and share with club members. The club will provide utensils and drinks. There will be no show and tell this month, but there will be a wood raffle, so bring quality wood to contribute to the cause and money to buy raffle tickets.
There will be 7 stations for your learning opportunities:
1. Sharpening tools
2. Fix-its Q&A
3. Coloring
4. Air brushing and transfers
5. Tool use & techniques
6. Making pens
7. Making small boxes
Each station is on-going during the meeting so you can stop by as many as you want to learn the technique(s) at that station. Bring tools if you need to learn how to sharpen them. As you see the demonstration, you can ask the demonstrator to let you try it and have a hands on opportunity.
If you haven’t renewed your membership for 2010, please do so quickly as you’ll only remain on our active roster for one more month. Dues remain at $25 for the year, which is a great deal considering we’ve added one more monthly meeting to the annual schedule.
Get signed up for the 2010 symposium featuring Alan Lacer, Dave Schweitzer and Bill Luce on July 24. This is another club benefit and very good value for the $80 registration fee, which includes a full day of woodturning demonstrations from some of the best woodturners in the world, a lunch and lots of door prizes. Also get signed up for the classes by Alan Lacer by contacting Al Price on 360-791-0396. The classes cost $130 for the day and are filling up rapidly so get your calls into Al if you want to participate. The classes are all day events with the following topics and dates:
1. Sunday July 25 – making and using a hook tool – Alan will provide the steel and show how to make an effective tool he uses for making boxes
2. Monday July 26 – Mastering the Skew – Alan is known worldwide for his capability in using the Skew – note this class is full, but we’ve opened up another one on Wednesday, July 28
3. Tuesday July 27 – Creating a flared rim vessel – design and form
4. Wednesday July 28 – Mastering the Skew
I’ve attached three e-mails from the American Association of Woodturners for your information. If you haven’t yet joined AAW, please consider doing so as it offers good value for the annual $48 membership fee. Go to http://www.woodturner.org/ for more information. I’ve also attached information on the Vancouver B.C. symposium in September of this year for your information.
Some of our members have done an annual training class for a school in Puyallup and we are looking for a few people who would like to participate this year. The date would be either April 14 or 21 and takes up most of the day. If you’re interested, contact Bob Bower at bowerfourb@earthlink.net this is an opportunity to give back to the community and have some fun with a great group of kids.
Finally, remember our monthly support of the Thurston County food bank by bringing items to help this worthy cause.
