Here is the picture and some details: 1945? Yates American 36” Bandsaw. Bought from Don Peterson @ Vintage American Woodworking Machinery. It is now 220 volt single phase. The electric motor is 7.5 hp. The piece weighs about 3,000 lbs. I bought it (2006) and had it completely restored for $7,500. This is about what a new 36” Laguna or Model 900 Agazanni would cost; only this is a lot more stable. Lightly used since restoral.

The price is $5,000.00. The purchaser moves it.

The August meeting for the Woodturners of Olympia will be Thursday, August 26 at the Thurston County Fairgrounds starting 6:30. This month Kathy Reed, a long time club member, will be demonstrating “pens and other stuff”. Kathy was a beginning turner when she joined the club a few years ago but has become an accomplished woodturner, especially in the art of making pens. Join us for what I’m sure will be a very enjoyable and educational evening. Remember to bring some quality wood for the raffle and your show and tell items.

This is the time of year where I issue a call for anyone interested in serving on the board of directors for 2011. We’ve had a very stable board, but are always on the lookout for new blood, so if you’re interested in participating on the board in any capacity, let me know your interest through an e-mail response no later than September 7. The board will put together the slate of proposed board and officers for 2011 and present to the membership at the October meeting.

If you’re not an AAW member, take a look at the benefits and consider joining. I think you’ll find it worthwhile.

Starting this month we’ll have raffle tickets available for a Sears Craftsman lathe with duplicator, with the winner being drawn at the Holiday party in December – you won’t have to be present to win. They were donated by Dave Lane who is a new member of the club. Tickets will be $5 each or 5 for $20 with all proceeds going to supporting club activities. I’ve attached pictures of the lathe and duplicator and will bring them to the meeting so you can view them up close. These are used and quite a few years old; however, I’ve checked out the lathe and it all works. Here’s more specifics of what is included in the package:

•	Sears Craftsman 12” wood lathe with 36” spindle capacity

•	Four speeds based on belt positioning with RPMs at 875, 1350, 2250, and 3450

•	Has spindle lock and indexing capability

•	Two face plates

•	Three drive centers

•	Double banjo for the duplicator

•	Tool rest

•	Deluxe revolving center system

•	#1 morse taper

•	It’s either a 1/3 or ½ HP motor – the writing is hard to read but for this size lathe it’s adequately powered

•	Duplicator which can be attached for replicating spindles (note if you’ve not used a duplicator before, unless you spend upwards of $5,000 or more for a high quality one, they are good for replicating shape, but final finish is still needed using skews or gouges and then sanding; but having said that, they can reduce replication time considerably)

There are no instructions for the duplicator, but I have a Vega duplicator and it appears to be similar in design. I also looked up on the Sears web site and see they still sell them, so it may be possible to get a set of instructions from them. Here’s the web link if you want to check it out: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00924951000P?keyword=lathe+duplicator&viewType=gal&sLevel=0&prop17=lathe%20duplicator

We may also have a small Grizzly lathe to include in the raffle; however, I don’t’ have the specifics of it as of today, but will follow up later or have it at the meetings for review.

Thanks to everyone who supported the 2010 “Creativity in Woodturning” symposium and classes held the end of July. The reviews were highly positive and it netted the club nearly $2800 that will be put forth in support of club activities. Thanks to fund raising activities of this nature, we have one of the best woodturning libraries around and it allows us to bring in some quality demonstrators. If anyone has an interest in adding items to the library, let our librarian, Marian Bailey know. Additionally if you have an interest in bringing in specific demonstrators, let Al Price know. Alternately you can e-mail me and I’ll pass it along to them. The demonstrator for 2011 is already committed and that is Mike Mahoney, who is one of the world’s most recognized and experience production turners. The symposium will be held on Saturday, July 23, so put it on your calendars now.

One last item and that is when you shop at our sponsor stores, please let them know that you are a member of the Woodturners of Olympia. I was in one of the Olympia local sponsor stores last week and he’s no longer providing the 10% discount to members, because he doesn’t believe we shop there. I had no evidence to refute his position, but also could not fault him for it. So just a reminder to support our local vendors and let them know you’re from the club and I’m sure he’ll reinstate the discounts.

A Review by Larry Miller

If you like wood, then you’ll find something to enjoy in Spike Carlsen’s “eclectic” book on the history of wood, as it has something for everyone. From the 50,000 year old wood description and explanation to the wacky world of woodworkers, you’ll find something you probably didn’t know about this most abundant resource.

I call it an eclectic book because it’s not written to flow from beginning to end like a novel, but as a treatise on the myriad uses and love of one of the most abundant resources on earth. There’s the section on tools that work the wood including not only the serious use of wood lathes but also the non-serious use of belt sander racing. Can you imagine spending over $1,000 and 125 hours building a custom belt sander that can sand a 2X10” board completely in two in seconds, just so you can make it go fast down a 40 foot track?

There is literally something for everyone with just some of the topics in the book listed as follows: how trees make wood, chainsaw artistry, wood carving with a master who makes Ferraris, wood collecting, Stradivarius Violins from wood, making of a Steinway D piano using 12,000 pieces, wood in sports, wood as shelter, solving mysteries through the use of wood forensics, wood in war, wood in the use of transportation including wooden rails and gondolas, and much more. My favorite was learning how wood pilings played a major role (and still does) in the creation of Venice. Pilings were used to stabilize the foundations of the buildings on which the water city is built.

Spike is an editor, author, carpenter and woodworker who has been immersed in the world of wood and woodworking for over 30 years. Prior to becoming an editor, he worked as a carpenter for 15 years and ran his own construction and remodeling company, so he writes not only from research but also from a practical viewpoint.

A Splintered History of Wood (ISBN: 978-0-06-137357-2; Harper Perennial) can be purchased at Barnes and Noble, Borders, independent bookstores, Amazon.com and other retailers. For more information, visit www.asplinteredhistoryofwood.com.
For every book sold, the author will donate funds to plant a seedling at the Bomalong’ombe Secondary School tree farm in central Tanzania.
I also have a copy and am willing to loan it out – if interested, give me a call, Larry Miller
