A few words about Jon Magill and Ornamental Turning

Ornamental Turning, or OT, is a specialized niche of woodturning that provides a way to add precise surface decorations to turnings. OT was popularized during the Victorian-era but had fallen largely out of vogue due to the rarity and cost of the lathes and equipment. The rarest but most magical of the ornamental lathes were called “rose engines” because of their ability to cut a tremendous variety of flower-like patterns on the workpiece. Obtaining an antique rose engine today would be nearly impossible and incredibly expensive. You can read a brief overview of OT and rose engines at:

http://www.woodturner.org/products/aw/howto/rose/MDFOverview.pdf

To overcome the hurdles of cost and availability, Jon wrote about, and published the plans for, a homemade rose engine in the Spring 2007 issue of American Woodturner. The lathe, made from a half-sheet of MDF, is now known as the “MDF Rose Engine”. You can read the original article about it here:

http://www.ornamentalturners.org/assets/content/RoseEngine.pdf

After seeing the demo, if you are interested in building an MDF Rose Engine, the construction instructions and detailed drawings are available here:

Artist’s Statement — Jon Magill

I have been working with wood and tools all my life, early on as a hobbyist, and now as a second career. I have always had an affinity for wood as a medium and have also been drawn to mechanical devices for as long as I can remember. I derive a lot of enjoyment working out the processes that go into making an object and devising a sequence that allows something to actually be brought to fruition.

I re-discovered woodturning about a dozen years ago when I was given a lathe. Two years later I stumbled upon the esoteric art of ornamental turning, a highly specialized, Victorian-era technique that enables very precise surface decorations, using a complex lathe called a rose engine. Rose engines were primarily used by jewelers, watchmakers and artists like “Faberge”.

Exposure to the niche of ornamental turning immediately resonated for me and I knew I had found a vehicle that would give me an expressive balance between my technical bent and creative desires. Using the rose engine lets me marry the organic nature of wood, the industrial gears to work it, and my own sense of design. The possibilities are limitless but always different.

I enjoy the challenge of making boxes, particularly the precision required to produce threaded wooden boxes. Recent works also include experimentation with resins and other materials by themselves or in combination with the exotic woods I normally use.

Although I am primarily a self-taught woodworker, I have taken advantage of a number of woodturning classes, lessons from visiting demonstrators, and the help of a few world-class mentors. I have written and published numerous articles on ornamental turning, as well as being asked to be a demonstrator at multiple national symposiums.

I studied photography, art and design before turning to engineering as a career. After retiring from an engineering career, my wife and I moved to Whidbey Island to build our house, where I am happily working in my shop pursuing my second career in woodworking.

Artist’s Statement for John Shrader

I try to convey a feeling of grace and elegance with my work. I love the richness of wood grain and delight in displaying it so others can also appreciate its beauty. While I find perfection admirable, for me it is the siren song leading to being safe, so I strive most of all for excellence. I utilize my background in engineering to facilitate executing difficult projects, but the technology is always subservient to communicating a feeling or an idea. For me, working in my shop a joyful experience. I hope that this joy is communicated to those who acquire my work, and that they share in it.

Biographical Summary for John Shrader

I have made things with my hands as long as I can remember, such as model airplanes, jewelry, furniture, optical instruments, and most recently wood turnings. I retired from Boeing in 1998 where I was first an engineer and then a manager working with explosives, lasers, electric guns, advanced inspection techniques, etc. While I enjoyed my Boeing career immensely, I missed being “hands on” my last years as a manager. Shortly before I retired I started wood turning. About 6 years ago I ran out of friends and relatives to give my bowls to, so I started selling my work through the Northwest Fine Woodworking Gallery. Since then I have increased my outlets to The Real Mother Goose in Portland OR, Semanatics in Edmonds WA, The Bellevue Arts Museum Gift Store in Bellevue, WA and The Artful Home, an on-line gallery. In 2008, my turning won the NW Fine Woodworking 29th annual box competition in both the juried and people’s choice categories.

Print this out for the meeting!

The meeting of the Woodturners of Olympia will take place this coming Thursday, January 27 at the Thurston County Fairgrounds, starting at the usual time of 6:30p.m. until 9:00p.m. The demonstrator this month will be our own David Charles showing us how he makes wood turned scoops. I think you’ll find this an interesting and educational session so plan on coming.

Please bring your show and tell items to share, as well as some quality wood for the raffle and your food bank items in support of this worthwhile charity. Thanks to everyone who supports our club and the food bank. Earle McNeil our interface for the food bank will give us a recap of the club’s contributions this past year.

We have a request from Glenn Sutt to make some “historic” toys for Fort Nisqually. They’re looking for some tops, ball and cup, etc. that are used in the children’s educational area of the fort. Glenn will give us more information at the meeting.

The membership committee is taking payment for the 2011 dues, which remain at $25 for the year. Bring your checkbooks (cash also accepted) and get those dues paid. The timeline for dropping those who have not paid is ticking so in order to keep on our distribution list dues need to be paid ASAP.

The club approved compensation guidelines in 2009, but part of those guidelines require they be reviewed for possible updates annually. Due to increasing operational costs (attracting good demonstrators, library additions, etc.) plus the need to keep bureaucracy at a minimum so things flow smoothly, the board recently revised the guidelines. The primary changes were to increase the amounts the VP of programs can approve without board approval, brought the cost of renting a members shop into alignment for both week day and week end use, and provide a clause to let the librarian order up to $300 of materials yearly based upon member feedback and without approval by the board. A copy of the guideline is attached FYI. If anyone has questions, let me know and we can bring it up at a meeting for discussion.

Be sure to put July 23, 2011 on your calendars for another terrific WoO symposium. This year we’ll have two world renown demonstrators for the day. Mike Mahoney and Stephen Hatcher will both be on hand for a full day of inspiring demonstrations. More information will be provided later or check out the club web site for information.

There will be NOT be a mentor open shop at my shop this Saturday, but we will most likely have one in February.

And Finally a reminder that the February 24th meeting will be one of the popular “turn and learn” meetings where this month we’re targeting 8 different stations. As of this date we still need someone to cover the session on photography methods, so if you can handle this, let Al Price or me know. Here’s a complete list of all sessions planned:

Annual (Feb. 2011) Mini Turn & Learn Demonstrations

Turning End Grain & Spalted Wood	Larry Miller

Coloring/Dyeing	Kim Hover

Turn a Pen for our Military Personnel	Open to Members

Finishing Projects – Wax, Varnish	David Charles

Photography – Methods	TBD

Turning Bottle Stoppers	Larry Taylor

Turning Hollow Forms	Mark Hunter
